The academic program of the Institute for Information Systems and New Media aims at linking technological and economic knowledge and thus educates IT- and IS-specialists with solid qualifications in information technology and business administration. Equipped with these skills the current and future labor market situation offers our graduates excellent professional opportunities in innovative fields.
The long term objective of our academic program is to enable graduates to actively design and implement organizational information systems by means of new media. The development process is not limited by existing information systems and feasability issues but is driven by the creativity of designers and implementers. The application areas range from engineering single workplaces to modeling intra- and inter-company processes and allow for improvements, the support of collaborations, the integration of new business ideas, and the reaction to environmental changes.
Our Institute investigates software-based approaches to develop an infrastructure for the use of new media. These investigations focus primarily on the field of internet-based information systems. The teaching contents involve technologies (e.g., software technology), content design (modeling), as well as the automation of information processing techniques to create information value chains (e.g., in E-commerce or B2B-business).
The lectures encompass the subject areas new media and electronic commerce, object-oriented design of application systems, and object-oriented Internet applications. The deepening and practical application of the skills developed in the lectures is supported through proseminars and the Seminar in New Media.
All courses are based on a credit-point system to ensure a firm study process and short study terms. Intensive support, an excellent framework, and realistic task objectives allow for satisfiable results in manageable time spans. The knowledge transfer in the courses is actively supported through new media for communication and information of and among students.
It is our main concern to combine research and teaching. Our academic program enables students to actively contribute to the Institute's research projects, e.g., within the scope of diploma theses. These theses are not solely used for examination purposes, but constitute reusable research contributions for the Institute and support students in preparing for later practical and scientific work. After all it is our goal to educate future academic personnel by increasing scientific awareness.

As part of the Bachelor Program, one Bachelor thesis must be written. A thesis project supervised by one of our faculty members is ideally related, but not limited to the topics of the Bachelor-level courses offered by the Institute. Each Bachelor thesis should be completed within one semester. The completed thesis must be presented once in the Konversatorium.
Diploma/ Master Thesis
We expect our students to show interest in independent scientific work, to focus on problems that are in line with the Institute's research and teaching areas, and to actively contribute to the Konversatorium and regularly report on the work progress.
The general procedure for preparing a diploma thesis involves:
- becoming familiar with the subject area (approx. 6 weeks),
- establishing a precise project definition and working plan,
- performing project-oriented work including regular progress reports (approx. 6 months),
- conducting at least two presentations in the Konversatorium:
- one at the initial phase of the project to present the research design,
- one at the finishing phase of the project to present the research results,
- delivering the diploma thesis in printed and electronic format.
The list of suggestions for research topics is not a complete summary of all potential topics, but it gives an introduction to the Institute's current research interests. Students may contribute to the final topic and project definition.
We expect our students to show interest in independent scientific work, to focus on problems that are in line with the Institute's research and teaching areas, to aim at preparing (at least) two publications (per year) for appropriate scientific journals or conferences, and to actively contribute to the Konversatorium and regularly report on the work progress.
The general procedure for preparing a dissertation involves:
- becoming familiar with the subject area (approx. 6-12 months),
- establishing a precise project definition and working plan,
- performing project-oriented work including regular progress reports in the Konversatorium,
- conducting a presentation on the research results in the Konversatorium,
- delivering the dissertation in printed and electronic format, including an abstract for the website.
