PROLEARN is a 'Network of Excellence' financed by the IST (Information Society Technology - Contract number 507310) programme of the European commission dealing with technology enhanced professional learning.

The PROLEARN mission is to bring together the most important research groups in the area of professional learning and training, as well as other key organisations and industrial partners, thus bridging the currently existing gap between research and education at universities and similar organisations at the one hand, and training and continuous education that is provided for and within companies at the other hand.

PROLEARN’s approach to support professional learning is characterised by the assumption that professional lives are changing continuously and require specific knowledge, skills and competences for a certain environment and in a certain context. PROLEARN assumes that the process of lifelong learning takes place in the workplace setting acknowledging the fact that the scope of respective learning arrangements is overarching from formal, informal and non formal to academic settings and vocational training environments.

The PROLEARN consortium consists of leading research institutions from the different research areas necessary for advancing the state-of-the-art of professional learning. These leading research institutions cover the whole broad area of professional learning necessary to address in detail the issues of Personalized Adaptive Learning; Learning Objects, Metadata and Standards; Interactive media; Online experimentation; Brokerage Systems, LMS and Delivery; Business Models, Business Processes and Markets; Knowledge Work Management, and have the necessary background and experiences to make the bold visions of the PROLEARN Academy and PROLEARN Virtual Competence Centre a reality. The PROLEARN consortium is led by the PROLEARN Coordinator, the L3S Research Center (L3S, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Nejdl) that provides a strong background in innovative learning technologies while the PROLEARN Vice-Coordinator IWi/DFKI (Prof. Dr. Dr. mult. hc. August-Wilhelm Scheer) has a large experience in the field of business technologies. The synergy of the expertise of both partners ensures that all relevant aspects of PROLEARN in the field of professional learning will be pursued thoroughly and successfully.
